Newburgh Foods – Compliance Case Study.

Based in Wigan, Newburgh Foods Ltd is a leading UK supplier of premium poultry products, distributing over 200 tonnes of chicken each week to supermarkets, restaurants, fast food outlets, and wholesalers. Renowned for their commitment to quality, innovation, and operational excellence, Newburgh Foods delivers tailored solutions to meet the varied requirements of its customer base.

Due to the scale and complexity of their operations, particularly the different access requirements for office and production teams, there was a need for a streamlined, compliant system that aligned with British Standards (BS). Previously, multiple third-party providers were responsible for different aspects of compliance, making it challenging for Directors and the Health & Safety team to maintain visibility and ensure consistency across all services. In addition, poor data connectivity between sites caused frequent disruptions in system communication, leading to operational inefficiencies and concerns around staff and procedural monitoring.

What We Did.

Lansafe conducted a thorough assessment of both sites, reviewing all entry and exit points including emergency access, as well as staff and visitor routes. Emergency lighting systems were evaluated to ensure coverage across all exits and stairwells, particularly in split-level areas, in the event of a power outage. Fire extinguishers were checked, tested, and properly logged, and a full Fire Risk Assessment was undertaken in accordance with BS standards.

Security was also upgraded. CCTV and intruder systems were modernised, and the fire detection systems were tested and repaired to ensure full functionality, especially in high-risk, high-noise areas. Weekly procedural checklists were implemented for the on-site Health & Safety manager to support ongoing compliance. To improve connectivity and communication, Lansafe upgraded the internet service to a dedicated leased line, installed managed firewalls, and deployed a VOIP telephony system to ensure robust, real-time communication between both sites.

Newburgh Foods now operates with a fully integrated, managed health and safety compliance framework that is aligned with British Standards. CCTV systems provide complete coverage across both locations and can be accessed remotely or from either site. Fire and intruder systems are continuously monitored and fully integrated into site evacuation plans, supported by 24/7 emergency response.

Staff receive regular training on emergency procedures, reinforcing a culture of awareness and preparedness. Maintenance schedules are being followed with all testing logged, and planned preventive checks are routinely carried out. Upgraded connectivity means both the Wigan and Golborne sites are now fully synchronised, allowing for secure server backup and faster communication.
