For all Fire Systems BS 5839-1 Section 6 Outlines the weekly and monthly recommended routine testing of the system. These include a weekly call point test and a monthly test to simulate loss of power. These tests must be recorded and logged.

Whose responsibility is security compliance?

It is the responsibility of the building or business owner to ensure that the emergency lighting system and fire systems are assessed and maintained regularly according to the relevant regulations.

How does emergency lighting work?

Emergency lighting is wired to the buildings permanent power, so that the lights batteries are charged and can provide back up power in the event of a power failure.

Does a business need a fire alarm?

Business owners have a duty to meet fire regulations, it is a legal requirement for the safety of staff and in some cases insurance and liability.

How often should I test my emergency lighting and fire alarm?

Emergency lighting should be tested by key switch at least once every month and a battery drop test up to 3 hours should be carried out every 6 months or at minimum annually.

Fire alarms should be tested weekly to ensure the call points (break glass) are working correctly. The fire system should be maintained by a qualified engineer every 6 months.

Lighting Extras Available

BS EN 50172 / BS 5266-8 states that all emergency lighting systems need to be tested monthly. Emergency lighting signage regulations require all luminaries and signs to illuminate, be clean and present.. We can do this for you and ensure that the emergency lighting also switches on correctly too.
